As we get closer to the cold winter, many unhoused Denverites may be worried about where they will stay under harsh weather conditions. According to the Common Sense Institution of Colorado, Denver’s metro area is home to record high of ten thousand homeless residents. Of this population, about 8,700 are sheltered, while the rest cannot find the proper health and safety of a sheltered home. However, this may change due to the recent closure of many shelters, which are no longer being funded, and are being replaced with “affordable housing” areas. 

According to Jon Ewing from Denver’s FOX31, he has described this outcome as “a lot of progress,” meaning this is a step forward in the right direction. Many believe, like Jon, for this to be true, but will it become sufficient before the harsh return of snowy weather? Will these homes truly be affordable? Although the idea of “affordable housing” is still in the air, current unhoused citizens who were under the closure of their sheltered homes will be “ moved to other shelters or will be offered permanent housing.”
