Not every quiet place is found in the library. On the third floor of the Lola & Rob Salazar Student Wellness Center, just past the elevator and down the hall, lies The Nook, a calm, tucked-away room filled with cots and lounge chairs, where students can rest, reset, and reclaim a little peace in the middle of their day. Â
With the nonstop pace of college life, students often forget to pause. Whether they are running between classes, managing jobs, or commuting across the city, it is easy for basic needs, like rest, to get sidelined. Open to all students, it is a space designed for short naps, mental health breaks, or simply a moment to breathe, and yet, many on campus still do not know it is there.  Â
Located on the third floor of the Wellness Center, The Nook is easy to miss but hard to forget once you have been there. The space is open during regular building hours and does not require any reservations. Students can walk in, find an open cot or lounge chair, and take a break, no questions asked.  Â
“This campus being a commuter campus, we want to have a place for students to relax and sleep,” said Diandra Walker, Coordinator of Healthy Promotions & Creations and Wellness & Recreation Services. “Being a wellness center, we care about students’ wellness. We want to make sure students are fueling their bodies by getting proper sleep and rest for their bodies, and to increase academic performance, not just for commuter students, but for all students.” Â
The room itself is quietly inviting. Natural light filters in through the windows, and a soft glow from the hallway keeps the space gently lit, enough to relax, but not so dark that students risk oversleeping. There are no buzzers, no check-in kiosks, and no timers. It is intentionally simple, just a quiet room where tired minds can unwind.  Â
Though the room holds multiple cots and lounge chairs in one shared space, the atmosphere stays respectful and low-key. Students bring headphones, sleep masks, or just close their eyes for a moment of stillness. Whether someone has ten minutes or thirty, The Nook offers a rare commodity on campus: uninterrupted calm.  Â
In a college culture that often rewards hustle over health, The Nook is a reminder that taking care of yourself does not mean falling behind. It means making space, literally and figuratively, to recharge. So next time the day starts to feel too loud, too long, or too much, remember, not every quiet place is in the library. Sometimes, it is just down the hall, with a cot and a little sunlight waiting for you.  Â
