Kelsi Dew, Assistant Director for Student Engagement

On Friday August 23, 2024, in Student Commons 1600 SGA hosted their first Senate of the Fall 2024 semester. First up on the agenda was the swearing in of seven new members of the team; Prateek Grothwal, Salini Pradhan, Michael Leaser, Jalissa Vega, Beth Thomason, Jess Shelton, Heather Chrisman, and Nicholas Pham. Next, the 2024-2025 Fiscal Budget was approved with the following numbers: $226,031 for wages, $29,705 for operating, and $56,435 for the Finance and Funding Committee.

The Finance and Funding Committee reviews student organization budget proposals. The committee approves funds for organizations’ events, professional development, and marketing and promotion. The majority of this week’s meeting was spent analyzing and making amendments to this year’s guidelines to ensure that they are ready for student organizations by the date that proposal applications open for the organizations, September 2nd. Ultimately, manybeneficial amendments were made, but full approval of the guidelines was tabled until 8/30/2024 to allow the Senate body more time to review and make any additional amendments.

President Savannah Brooks gave a presentation as a recap of her and Vice President Mitchell Mauro platform for this year. Their platform includes a focus on the following topics: tackling food insecurity, expanding mental health resources, improving transportation, student fee transparency, and student employee advocacy ad hoc.

Chief of Staff Tegan Gouff also gave a presentation that included updates to the Senatebody of how this year will operate. After presentations, the Civics Committee, College Council, Finance and Funding Committee, Public Relations, Student Services Review Committee, Judicial Committee, Student Advisory Committee to the Auraria Board, and Ex Officio members were able to give updates. Though there were not many updates, all of these groups are geared up and starting to work on amazing things for the CU Denver student body.
